Advice on Training
Companies can only achieve and sustain success by effectively developing a committed workforce with the skills and knowledge appropriate to the needs of their business. Continuing learning is vital to keep pace with continuing change. Scottish engineering recognizes this and facilitates the involvement of their member organizations in learning in a variety of ways including:-
- Provision of practical advice on education and training issues, e.g. operation of Modern Apprenticeships, sourcing of appropriate training courses, knowledge transfer partnership information, IIP.
- Making sample documents available e.g. Engineering Modern Apprenticeship contract, Training agreement.
- Documents explaining e.g. Engineering Modern Apprenticeship, Scottish Educational Qualifications are available.
- Guides e.g. Guide to Union Learning Reps, Guide to getting involved with education.
Regular written briefings on education and training topics including a quarterly education and training Newsline.
- Information on sources of funding.
- Assistance with employee recruitment including access to engineering Apprentice recruitment initiative Scottish Engineering Connections.
- Scottish Engineering Connections
Information about apprenticeships throughout Scotland is given through the medium of an annual publication by Scottish Engineering. This publication is available on our website www.scottishengineering.org.uk and is updated early in the new year each year. The publication includes case studies of apprentices currently employed in the engineering industry in Scotland, information on the format of an Engineering Modern Apprenticeship and useful links to other sources of information. Hyperlinks allow the potential apprentices immediate access to the relevant companies websites and on-line applications processes.
Annual Awards
Hammermen Award
In association with the Incorporation of Hammermen we annually present an award to a young engineer who has led a project that benefited his/her company and the industry in general. The candidates submit written details of a technological project with which they have been instrumental in formulating and driving. The judges visit the finalists at their workplace where the competing engineers will make a presentation. The prize of £1,000 is accompanied by a prestigious trophy, which is held for one year.
Craft Competition
Each year we host the award ceremony for the 1st Year Engineering Craft Apprenticeship Competition. Earlier in the year the finalists for this award are involved in an all-day competition which includes a written test and a specialist skills test. A team of independent judges selects the winners who share £1,000 in prize money.
