The bank representatives promised to feed the information into the Monetary Policy Committee discussions.

Dr Peter Hughes, Chief Executive of Scottish Engineering, seated right, had attended a dinner in Edinburgh the previous evening at which Mervyn King, Governor of the Bank of England addressed a select group of senior business executives.
