The voice of manufacturing engineering in Scotland
Robots for Romania
A team of three robots is leaving Scotland this week for Romania – but these robots weigh a total of 80 tons and are destined to work in the toughest environment in the world, in the intense heat of a forge.

Manufactured by East Kilbride company Clansman Dynamics the order which is worth 1 million Euros has been placed by one of German’s biggest and most successful metal forging companies.

The machinery, which has been developed by Clansman Dymanics is in three distinct units. The first will automatically load a 2 tonnes block of steel up to five metres into a furnace at 1200 degrees Centigrade. The second takes the red-hot block from the furnace to a press where it is pre-formed and pierced. Finally the third member of the robotic team takes the still glowing metal to a vast rolling mill that extrudes the block into a ring of four metres diameter.

Many of the finished items are destined for use in a wind turbine. The wind energy sector is providing a tremendous amount of business for the East Kilbride company in countries as diverse as Spain, India, Norway and China. Company Commercial Director Jim McManus is pleased to admit that already they have a full order book for 2009, and that 2010 is rapidly filling up.  He added: “This is a hugely important contract, as it establishes Clansman Dynamics in the forge market and adds to our success in the foundry sector.”

The automatic machines have been developed by Clansman Dynamics who initially produced manual loading equipment and have designed and developed the new range of robotic machines.

Dr Peter Hughes, Chief Executive of Scottish Engineering, the support organisation for the industry in Scotland said: “I am delighted that a Scottish engineering company has proved to be so successful in this sector. It is a fantastic show of faith by Clansman’s German customer, particularly bearing in mind the fact that Clansman equipment is the only non-German component within the newly developed £5m forge.   It shows that Scottish engineers are still the best in the world and that they are competing, and winning, at the highest levels!”
