Pupils from Lenzie Academy in East Dunbartonshire were honoured this week for winning a national engineering competition. Dr Peter Hughes, Chief Executive of Scottish Engineering presented the team of S2 pupils with a silver salver to celebrate their winning the Faraday Engineering Challenge against 180 schools from all over Britain.
The contest was run by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the final was held in London.
The Lenzie team consisted of six pupils who were guided throughout the exercise by teachers John Shearer of the ED&T department and Mrs Gillian Melvin who is a science teacher.
The contest involved the pupils - Sarah Somerville, Lacy Dewar, Fraser MacLeod, Andrew McCormack, Jonathan McAuley and Ellis Smith -1 designing and producing a table tennis server for which they had to use their knowledge of science, design and technology and maths.
In presenting the salver at the S2 assembly in the school, Dr Hughes said: "This is yet another example of Scottish schools being innovative and successful. To have taken on the challenge of a national competition and beating off 179 other teams is a tremendous achievement, which is why Scottish Engineering decided to mark the occasion with a permanent award which will give future generations of Lenzie Academy pupils something to live up to.
"I am delighted that the members of the team are going to study science subjects at school, so we may have a couple of budding engineers here.
