‘FUTURE CAPTAINS OF INDUSTRY' 10th ANNUAL SCOTTISH ‘CONTRIBUTION TO BUSINESS' AWARDS
In today's times of stringent economic constraints, a beacon of hope shines at The Year in Industry today as it held its annual finals of the prestigious Scottish ‘Year in Industry' ‘Contribution to the Business Awards' at Strathclyde University on the 1st of July and the event sponsors were BAE Systems Regional Aircraft in Prestwick.
Participating students who have been aptly called the "Future Captains of Industry" spent a challenging and demanding year in industry prior to going to university.
The overall Scottish winner, with a prize of £500, sponsored by BAE Systems Regional Aircraft, was Luke Marris who before his placement went to St Margaret's Academy in Livingston. Luke spent his year with the superb SELEX Galileo in Edinburgh, where he carried out an outstanding, innovative and challenging project, which involved researching a rapid way of calibrating array antennas. He also produced software which will save the company significant amounts of time and money in the calibration process. Luke gained invaluable industrial experience as well as optimisation techniques and applications to engineering problems.
The Runner up prize of £300, sponsored by Shell UK, was awarded to James Brown who went to Stirling High School, James had an exciting year with the innovative Wood Group Engineering in Aberdeen. His project was to effectively identify, investigate and incorporate new innovations for a new corrosion resistant coating technology. The technology he came up with has given their engineers an effective new tool for dealing with challenging engineering problems, one which saves upwards of 30% on material costs, cuts lead times by over 40%, with the use of less scarce materials and therefore is more environmentally friendly.
Sean McGovern, Director of Customer Support at BAE Systems Regional Aircraft was the guest speaker and one of the judges at the event and commented "At BAE Systems we actively support education and skills programmes which seek to inspire young people into science and engineering careers, and having successfully worked with the Engineering Development Trust supporting students from a local secondary school, we were delighted to sponsor the Engineering Development Trust 'Year in Industry' awards. The technical quality and presentational style of the project work was that of seasoned professionals rather than young adults barely a year out of school. I have no doubt that these young people will much sought after by industry in the years to come.'
Allan Colquhoun - University Liaison Manager at SELEX Galileo in Edinburgh commented "We are delighted to be part of this programme and believe it is a great opportunity for the young people involved as well as contributing to our business, we are very pleased to see our students success recognised."
Duncan McSporran Director EDT Scotland commented ‘The Year in Industry is the flagship culmination of EDT's series of innovative pathway of programmes and it provides the very best opportunity for motivated young students, hoping to seize the opportunities which will boost their careers in industry. Companies get the chance to work with Scotland's best, well- motivated, future staff. The Year in Industry aimed at attracting and retaining the best of students in careers in Scottish industry '
