The Carbon Trust in Scotland is calling for engineers and project managers who have implemented effective energy saving measures within the manufacturing sector to stand up and be recognised for their work. Now in its fourth year, the Energy Efficiency in Manufacturing Award, organised by Carbon Trust in Scotland, is designed to acknowledge outstanding achievement in the manufacturing industry for energy efficiency. The award will be presented at the Scottish Engineering Annual Awards dinner, which will take place on 14 May at the Marriott Hotel, Glasgow.
John Stocks, manager of Carbon Trust in Scotland, commented: "Given the current economic climate, the need for manufacturing companies to save money through energy efficiency is more important than ever. We are looking for innovative work which has been undertaken that has had a significant impact on a company's energy efficiency and which can be used as an exemplar for others to follow." The Carbon Trust considers a number of criteria in judging each applicant. These include the energy cost savings achieved by the company and the impact of the project on the applicant's competitive position. The project's long terms sustainability is also considered and the framework within which the project sits, such as the company's overall energy policy, the plans and programmes to implement those policies and the monitoring, reporting and control procedures in place to maintain improvements. The Dumfries site of international manufacturer DuPont Teijin Films won the award in 2008 for its work in implementing a number of energy and cost saving measures across the site. The site has actively managed energy over a number of years and has successfully undertaken a number of energy saving projects as opportunities have permitted, significantly reducing their energy consumption and carbon footprint. As a result of support from the Carbon Trust in 2005 the company installed a monitoring and Targeting (M&T) system at the Dumfries Plant. This allows the company to systematically compare energy use to production activity in various parts of the plant, and identify further energy saving opportunities. In its first year this system facilitated a further 6% reduction in the amount of energy consumed. John Stocks added: "We are anticipating a high calibre of entries this year following last year's awards which in addition to DuPont Teijin Films, saw two further international companies highly commended for their work - Carron Phoenix at its Falkirk site and Diamond Power at the Dumbarton site."
