What we think of the Budget!

Comment on the Budget by Dr Peter Hughes, Chief Executive of Scottish Engineering.

"The Chancellor stated categorically that ‘manufacturing as a whole will pay less tax'. If that is the case then the engineering manufacturing sector in Scotland will be delighted.

"As it is, manufacturing companies will benefit from both the reduction in corporation tax and the raising of the threshold for paying National Insurance. If this, as is forecast, takes 650,000 employees out of paying tax then that will benefit our workforce.

 

"A bank levy of £2bn a year will help the economy but our concern is that banks will pass this on to business customers. This must not be allowed to happen."

Best figures for Engineering Industry in three years

Order intake and output volumes for the three months to June in Scotland's engineering sector are at their healthiest level for almost three years.

According to the Quarterly Review of the industry published by Scottish Engineering, the support group for the industry the improvements recorded in the previous two quarters have continued, pushing the figures well into positive territory.

Trades House of Glasgow Modern Apprentice of the Year Award 2010

Scottish Engineering's Chief Executive Dr Peter Hughes recently presented the awards and certificates to a number of apprentices at the Trades House of Glasgow Modern Apprentice of the Year Award 2010.

He was particularly pleased as two of the winners were from a member company, BAE Systems Surface Ships Ltd. The apprentices were Wai Chung Lam, a sheet metal worker and Michelle Lyon, an engineer.

Dr Peter Hughes, Chief Executive of Scottish Engineering welcomed a number of the initiatives spelled out in the Budget and said that if the Chancellor could deliver on these points then it would be to the benefit to the engineering manufacturing sector.

Engineering Industry maintains forward momentum

The improvements in order intake and output volumes reported by the engineering manufacturing sector in the final quarter of 2009 have been maintained into 2010, according to the latest review of the industry by Scottish Engineering, the industry support group.

However, as order intake within the engineering sector as a whole remains negative, large companies are bucking that trend and have returned positive results.
