SCOTTISH ENGINEERING CRAFT COMPETITION FOR 1ST YEAR MODERN APPRENTICES 2007

WINNER:  Craig Johnstone, Baker Hughes Inteq, Aberdeen

TOP ENGINEERING TRAINEES HONOURED

Scotland’s top engineering craft apprentices were announced at a ceremony in Scottish Engineering’s headquarters in Glasgow on Monday September 10.

From an original entry of twenty-five first year apprentices, the final three were presented with trophies and cheques by Jacqui Henderson CBE, Chief Executive of UK Skills.

The host at the event was Dr Peter T Hughes, chief executive of Scottish Engineering.

First prize of £500 and the individual trophy was won by Craig Johnstone who works as a modern apprentice with Baker Hughes Inteq, Aberdeen and was trained by Tullos Training.

Second prize of £300 and a trophy went to Jaclyn Lewczenko who works as a modern apprentice with Score Group and is training at Peterhead & District Group Training Limited.

Third prize of £200 and a personal trophy was won by Stuart Gordon of Dundee who is a modern apprentice with Michelin Tyre plc and trained at XM Services Ltd of Dundee.

IMECHE (Institution of Mechanical Engineers) is one of three main sponsors of the competition. They presented each of the three winners with student membership of the Institution. The other sponsors are Score Group PLC and Scottish Engineering, the major support group for the engineering industry in Scotland.

Both Baker Hughes Inteq and Tullos Training received a trophy to be retained for one year.

Ms Henderson congratulated the three winners of the competition but also asked the audience to congratulate all of the young apprentices who competed in the final. “Today is a celebration and recognition of the high level of skills which are as important in work as in sport. Too often these skills are recognised in sport but not in the workplace,” she added.

Dr Hughes told the audience: “Today’s three winners have taken their first steps on a career ladder in the engineering industry. Once they have completed their apprenticeship they can apply for EngTech registration which marks them out as skilled professionals. A continuing supply of high quality engineering modern apprentices is vital to the future success of our manufacturing industry.”
