     VARIED COURSES SUIT APPRENTICES

            IN DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES

  In order to give a broader range of engineering

  apprenticeship opportunities we have chosen six

  apprentices.

 

  Shaun Leonard, from Arbroath is studying Mechanical

  Engineering, David Gardiner from Dundee is studying 

  as a Maintenance Engineering.

 

 

  Shaun Leonard is with AGR Automation Ltd in Arbroath,

  David Gardiner is with Michelin Tyre PLC in Dundee and

  Douglas Crichton is with Lamond and Murray from

  Inverkeithing in Fife.

 

CASE STUDY:

Name:  Shaun Leonard

Age: 18

Company:  AGR Automation Ltd

Address of Company: Elliot Industrial Estate, Arbroath

Nature of company business:

Design & Manufacturers of Automated Assembly Systems.

For a wide range of clients worldwide who require individual or multiple components oriented and assembled together including for the Healthcare & Pharmaceutical Industry.

Type of apprenticeship:  EAL Modern Craft Apprenticeship

How long in apprenticeship:   Since August ‘05

Current course of study including subjects:

NC in Mechanical Engineering

Achievements:

Runner-up in Scottish Engineering National Craft Competition 2006.

Best local apprentice of the year at Angus Training Group 2005-06.

Why I chose engineering:

I chose engineering because it is a huge industry with many different career options. During the interview process I had a factory tour of AGR and decided I wanted to be part of the company as there is a chance to be involved in all aspects of production including design, manufacture, build and testing of systems.

What I like about the course:

You learn a variety of different aspects of engineering. As well as the core basics of various machining disciplines there are also interesting topics such as dynamics, thermo fluids and CNC programming.

What I like about the company:

The parts feeding and assembly systems we produce are sometimes very complex and I get good job satisfaction when some of the parts I have manufactured are assembled together, built and tested as part of the finished system.  The people I work with are friendly and willing to teach me new things.

Any other relevant achievements, sports, hobbies:

I enjoy modifying and tuning cars, also playing the guitar.

Future Plans:

I plan to finish my NC course and successfully complete an HNC in Mechanical Engineering during my four years as an apprentice. I hope to work in different departments of manufacture and assembly within the company learning new skills and become a design or project engineer within AGR Automation.

Age: 21

Nature of company business: Marine Hydraulic engineering

Type of Apprenticeship:            Modern Apprenticeship Mechanical Engineering (Assembly technician)

How long in apprenticeship:     Three and a half years

Current Course of study:            SVQ Level 3, HNC: Mechanical engineering hydraulics, plant systems, [lant maintenance, quality assurance.

Achievements: SVQ Level 2, NC Mechanical engineering.

Why I chose engineering: I will have good prospects to go further and give myself a good standard of living. I enjoy working with my hands and am not really the type pf person who enjoys spending a lot of time at a desk.

What I like about the course: Four days a week I am working and learning through experience. The other day in the week I am at college learning the theory behind the tasks I am performing at work.

What I like about the company: The company is good with a very experienced work force. There are lots of different skills to be learned like fitting, machining, testing and inspecting.

Any other relevant achievements: I am hoping after I have finished the SVQ and HNC that I will be able to go to university to do a degree in engineering on a day release basis.

How long in apprenticeship:

Currently in second year of a four year apprenticeship

Current course of study including subjects:

SVQ Level3 Engineering Maintenance, NC Electro-Mechanical Engineering

Achievements:

SVQ Level 2 Performing Engineering Operations

Award Winner Scottish Engineering Craft Competition 2006

Why I chose engineering:

Have always been interested in how things work. From a young age I have been helping my father repair cars and bikes and just seem to enjoy getting my hands dirty.

What I like about the course:

4 days a week are spent in the workshop learning new skills and practising the ones I have already gained. Being an additional skilled apprentice I really enjoy the variety of work.

What I like about the company:

The company looks out for its employees and believes in developing people to their full potential.

Any other relevant achievements, sports, hobbies:

Tinker about with motorbikes in my spare time

Future Plans:

To complete my apprenticeship and continue my studies to HND or Degree level.

CASE STUDY:

Name: Sam Doherty

Age: 19

Company: Phoenix Precision

Address: Southfield Industrial Estate, Glenrothes, Fife

Nature of company business: Sheet metal work

Type of Apprenticeship: Sheet metal

How long in apprenticeship: Two years

Current Course of study: SVQ3 Complying with statutory regs and organisational safety requirements. Using and interpreting engineering drawings. Work efficiently in engineering. Marking out components for metalwork. Cutting sheet metal to shape using hand or machine tools. Forming sheet metal using hand and machine tools. Producing sheet metal assemblies. Developing and marking out templates for metal work. Producing filet welded joints for a manual welding process.

Achievements: N/C fabrication and welding. SVQ 2.

Why I chose engineering: I wanted a good trade under my belt and I had already don the Engineering Advantage course at Lauder College.

What I like about the course: I enjoy the variety of work which includes punching, folding, welding, grinding and assembly.

What I like about the company: There is a variety of jobs that I can do. The holidays are very flexible.

Any other relevant achievements: I passed my Engineering Advantage course and I play golf at Pitreavie.

Future plans: To continue working towards my qualification and possibly gaining an HNC if possible.

 

CASE STUDY:

 

Name: Douglas Crichton

Age: 19

Company: Lamond & Murray Ltd

Address: Burnside, Inverkeithing Fife

 

Nature of company business:

Gear cutting specialists

 

Type of Apprenticeship:           

Mechanical engineering (manufacturing)

 

How long in apprenticeship:

Two years

 

Current Course of study: HND in

engineering manufacturing subjects –

IT, maths, metal manufacture.

 

Achievements: SVQ level 2 and

working towards HNC.

 

Why I chose engineering: It was a

childhood dream and metalwork was a

subject I always enjoyed at school.

 

What I like about the course: It gives

me a chance to learn new skills and

achieve better qualifications.

 

What I like about the company: It’s

a local family-run company where

everyone knows your name.

 

Any other relevant achievements:

This employment has helped me to gain

my driving licence which allows me to

drive to work.

 

Future plans: To finish my

apprenticeship and enjoy a long career

in engineering.

 

 

 

CASE STUDY: 

Name: Iain Whannel

Age: 18

Company: BAE Systems

Govan

 

Nature of company business: Naval

shipbuilding and other defence

contracts

Type of Apprenticeship: Pipe fitter

How long in apprenticeship: In first

year of a three year apprenticeship

 

Current Course of study: PEO Level 2

pipefitting, steel and copper fabrication

welding, TIG, MIG, MMA burning using

oxy/aceryl, SVQ2/NC

 

Achievements: Working to complete

my logbook.

 

Why I chose engineering: I have

always enjoyed doing practical work at

school. My grandfather was a marine

engineer and my uncle is a plumber so

they both gave me the idea on a career

path. Doing this course allows me to do

aspects of both.

What I like about the course: It gives me a different range of new skills like IC welding with different systems and using different techniques. Lecturers are down toi earth and are first class teachers.

What I like about the company: The company is a global brand recognised worldwide not just for shipbuilding but also for the manufacture of planes and submarines. The company is in constant contact with apprentices through the training offices.

Any other relevant achievements: I play football for my local team and 5-a-side with BAE apprentices. I was captain of the school team at Ardrossan Academy and we won a regional trophy.

Future plans: To complete my

apprenticeship and gain as many

certificates as I can.
